BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB
Three off the Tee - 4 March 2025 Newsletter
Hello there
We may be in March already, but for me, with the warmer weather, this is the start of a new year. The days are brighter and the daffodils are starting to show their beauty. Many members are aware that my home club is Lilleshall Hall. This year, one of my golfing goals is to play more golf. Over the past few years, my subs have meant I must pay around £300 per round. I cannot remember the last time I played here at Brocton. The other golfing goal, is to learn how to play golf 🙂 Lose some stress, relax and get out of my head. Do you have any golfing goals this year?
This year, both of our Captains ae supporting Katharine House Hospice. Katharine House aim to enable patients with life limiting conditions to live life as fully as possible and make the most of the time that they have, as well as supporting their loved ones. There are many members at Brocton that are thankful for the love and care they have shown to their loved ones and I hope that everyone will support Richard and Jenny in the many charity events they have planned for the year.

Par for the Course
Yesterday, the greens were hollow cored, a process that removes small plugs of thatch from the surface. Today, these areas were refilled, and it will take a few weeks for the greens to fully recover to the smooth surfaces Brocton is known for.
Applying top dressing helps improve surface drainage and allows oxygen to reach the root system, promoting deeper root growth. On a well-maintained green, roots can extend over five inches deep, even though the grass leaf is less than a centimetre. Enhancing these growing conditions leads to healthier turf and a better putting surface for that all-important one-putt!

Members Question
You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.
Q.1. I just wondered if there was a plan for 14th/15th where we have excessive water gathering and not naturally draining away into the streams. Obvious railway sleepers are one of the most water resistant things you can line a hazard stream with as water will not seep through. Is there any plans into drilling into the sleepers and installing perforated pipe & a number of chambers / soakaways out into the fairways around rough to try and increase the flow in which water can drain into the hazard.
A. In answer to this, we are waiting for this area to dry out a little more before we bring in a trencher to dig out some new channels, 0.9mts deep 12” wide, we then lay new perforated pipe on a base of gravel, more gravel on top of this before backfilling with soil land then re-turf. This will be done as per the drainage report specified.
The railway sleepers are an age old issue, we have managed to lift the top sleepers and place a wedge in between to see if this helps but ultimately my plan is to rip out those sleepers along 15 and replace with gabion baskets filled with stone.
Q. 2. Bunkers - A lot of hard work has gone into installing the new lining, sand and surrounds. Unfortunately there are now huge areas of exposure to the new lining and the yellow tags installed to tie the lining down. How can we as a golf club ensure that further damage to these newly installed bunkers does not occur?
A. We did order a load of sand for the new bunkers a few weeks ago but unfortunately it was a slightly different colour, our supplier said it was due to hitting different layers and there was nothing he could do! That sand we are currently using for top dressing the greens so until we have done that and can source the same colour sand as we have in the bunkers already we have a slight delay in topping them up.
Q.3. Cups. Out on the course we have the plastic rim / cuff installed flush to the level of the green. Doing some research and looking into this I believe this is causing the ever apparent crowning issues as the rims should be some 25mm from the level of the green. Is there a reason as to why we do not do this? Following from this, in the summer will these be removed to allow for painting the top inch with white spray?
A. The white cup protectors are doing a great job of protecting the cup whilst they sit flush with the surface, you are right in saying that they should sit 25mm below the level but this will in turn do what you say and cause the circumference of the hole to cave in over a short period. Due to the fact we haven’t had qualifying rounds through the winter this has no bearing on that rule. They will be removed when we come of mats and the grass starts to grow and the greens firm up some more.
