BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB

Three off the Tee - 28th October '25 Newsletter

Hello there

If you are huddled by a fire today, I thought this beautiful photo will remind you that summer days are on their way. A bit of a way off, but we are on our way.

We did enjoy some wonderful sunshine on Saturday (a busy day here on the course) and I must admit I enjoyed the hospitality of the Molineux even if I was very quiet in the middle of the home supporters. Unbelievably, even though I have supported them for over 50 years, this was the first time I have seen The Arsenal play live. To be fair, most of that 50 were in SA so opportunities were limited. 🙂

I am sharing this video again with Nevil showing us how to rake the new bunkers. Please click here to watch the short video. It’s in our hands as golfers to keep bunkers looking and playing great.

With our AGM this coming Thursday, I would like to thank our retiring Officers and MC members for their outstanding dedication over the past year. I am sure all our members recognize the time and energy you've invested, and we are deeply grateful for all you've done. Thank you once again for your service, and we wish you continued success in everything you do.

Pro Shop

A popular feature of Nevil’s club building skills is personalising wedges by stamping them with metal punches. There is a limit to what can be stamped and he’s been investigating utilising laser technologies to create endless possibilities. Anything made of metal can be etched with names, handwriting, logo’s, photographs, QR codes and much more. Basically anything you can think of can be done. Here’s a quick video of it in action. Nevil is working out it's best possibilities.

Members Question

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

Hole in One

Did you know:

  • The longest golf hole in the world is at the Sahara Golf Club in the UAE. It’s a par 7 hole that measures a staggering 1,100 yards!
  • The number of dimples on a golf ball varies slightly, but most standard golf balls have around 336 dimples. They’re designed to reduce air resistance and help the ball travel farther.
  • The world’s most expensive golf club is the Honma Five Star Golf Club, costing around $75,000 for a set of clubs. These clubs are handmade in Japan using luxury materials like gold and platinum.
  • The world’s only golf course located on an aircraft is aboard a Boeing 747. The plane was retrofitted with a putting green in its lounge area for passengers to practice during long flights.
  • The term "birdie" was coined in 1903 when a golfer in the U.S. hit a shot that was so good, his friend called it a “bird of a shot.” The term stuck!

Happy golfing everyone,

Karen
