To play well you must feel tranquil and at peace. I have never been troubled by nerves in golf because I felt I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. - Harry Vardon

BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB
Three off the Tee - 21 January 2025 Newsletter
Hello there
Not golf, football, rugby or even cricket, but starting off with tennis this week. Congratulations to Novak Djokovic on securing a thrilling Australian Open quarter-final victory over Carlos Alcaraz. Overcome with joy and relief, Djokovic immediately turned to Andy Murray, burying his head in his coach's chest.
The heartfelt celebration between the rivals-turned-colleagues followed Murray's unexpected yet remarkable success in his first coaching role. Truly a beautiful moment to witness. There seems to be nothing Murray cannot do.
A reminder to members that the AGM is next week Thursday, 30th January at 6:30pm. Proxy forms are available online or in the clubhouse for those members unable to attend.
Another five star review - a big thank you to the great team we have here at Brocton Hall!
''I played at BHGC as part of a society recently. We had two fantastic meals and were well looked after by the staff working there. The course was well presented & it has some unique & challenging holes.
It was also nice to see all the deer around the course in the afternoon too - unique indeed!''

Delia Fowler sent in these delightful photos of what appears to be Mallard ducks walking on water. As long as they don't turn the lakes into wine!

Juniors
Our Annual Junior Presentation Evening and Dinner, held on Sunday 5th January, was a fantastic celebration of the Junior Section’s successes in 2024, with over 100 Juniors and their families attending. The evening included a putting challenge, a fun game of Heads and Tails, and a tricky quiz on Tour Golf, before speeches from President Ned Edwards and Junior Organiser, Nicki Bowen. Ned praised the Juniors’ achievements and their smart turnout, while Nicki expressed gratitude to Club Officials, volunteers, and parents for their support.
Highlights included Dylan Brierley and Molly McMurray qualifying for the Race to Woodhall Spa final, the success of Liv Whittle and Joe McCandless in securing golf scholarships in the U.S, and Brocton Juniors sweeping the trophies at the 3 Hammers. The Junior Open saw a record 40 entries, and the Golf Rookies Programme thrived, introducing young players to the sport.
The evening also celebrated the achievements of our Junior Team in the Mercian Golf League. Junior Captain David reflected on his successful year, raised £800 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and handed over the Captain’s role to Taryn Davis, who introduced Ben Foulner as Vice-Captain. Trophies were presented by Club officials, with Liv Whittle receiving the Junior Club Champion trophy. Congratulations to all winners, and the Junior Committee looks forward to another successful year of golf and camaraderie in 2025.

Members Question
You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.
Q. With the AGM on the horizon at the end of this month and the next Vice Captain to be announced then I wondered if any progress has been made with a revised selection process for this important role or are we going to continue with the previous situation of what has, over recent years, been an appointment made based on the ‘old pals act’.
Myself and many other members are keen to know what the committee is proposing.
A. A selection process for officers and directors including a nominations committee for each made up of past officers and directors was proposed as part of the new rule changes put to the EGM on 6th January. The rule changes were not adopted by the membership.
The incoming management committee at the forthcoming AGM on 30th January will continue with the governance review and this may well be one of the changes proposed to members again, for members to decide.

Hole in One
William Mouw wears a bracelet on his right wrist that reads "NEVER EVER GIVE UP." That mantra was put to the test on Saturday when the 24-year-old went viral after recording an octuple-bogey on the notorious 16th hole during the second round of The American Express.
Mouw was right near the cut line when he approached the par-5 16th hole and quickly found himself in trouble, with his ball landing in the 18-foot deep greenside bunker.
It took Mouw a total of 13 shots to get through the hole, and as if that wasn't difficult enough, the PGA Tour rookie managed to escape the bunker twice, only to have the ball land back in it both times.
He is not alone and this can happen to the best of us.
The former Open champion, John Daly has racked up a few big numbers over the years, and there have been occasions where he has lost his head and maybe not given each shot enough care and attention.
During the 1998 Arnold Palmer Invitational, the American took 18 shots to get the ball in the hole at Bay Hill’s par-5 6th, a somewhat card-wrecking 13-over.

Happy golfing everyone,
Karen
