BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB

Three off the Tee - 3 December '24 Newsletter

Hello there

What a beautiful weekend it was here at Brocton Hall. The stunning photo above taken by Nigel Lunn, shows one of the reasons why. After the crazy weather earlier in November, those playing in the Men's Fur and Feather yesterday were glad to see (and feel) that beautiful sunshine.

Below was the prize table for the Fur and Feather Christmas competition.

Members and guests enjoyed a fabulous Saturday afternoon making Christmas Wreaths. Thank you to Sue Smith for sharing your knowledge and creating a fun afternoon.

What a fabulous evening we had with The Dirty Rockin Scoundrels on Friday evening. They certainly had everyone shaking their tail feathers and burning off the calories from the delicious pre show meal. Thank you to all the staff for simply being fabulous and to everyone who attended for bringing fun, laughter and showing some dancing skills that would give the Strictly stars a run for their money. You can watch one of the videos here (there are more on Facebook)

Lady Captain Julia and Vice Lady Captain Jenny, showed off their singing skills too 🙂

Please join Kevin Mellor for an afternoon of poetry in the Vardon Lounge on Tuesday, 10th December from 13:45 till 16:15 for the launch of 'Ramblings of a Free Man'. A series of vignettes follow, some comedic, some mired in tragedy. Sometimes we try to shape our destiny, other times it shapes us. Kevin will be joined by Mayor, Councillor Frank James and other special guests.

Member Photos

A tough call in November as we had some amazing photos sent in by members in November. The light is always spectacular. David Braddock, Kevin Mellor, Nigel Lunn and many more have sent in spectacular photos but this month, Mary Richards gets £5 on her bar card for capturing two squirrels splooting, basking in the morning rays on a tree trunk.

Par for the Course

A reminder that no go areas are as follows;

  • 12th over the brook, take your trolleys and buggies to the left and leave them on the path and walk to your ball.
  • 14th avoid the left hand side where we have opened up the brook.
  • 15th leave trolleys and buggies on the clubhouse side of the brook and walk up to the green. Please avoid playing your shot from wet areas. Take casual water relief.

Winter mats are compulsory on all fairways. In competitions or when submitting general play scores you are not allowed to use mats anywhere other than fairways ( closely mown areas). At all other times, feel free to use them in the rough too.

New bunker liners have been fitted to bunkers on holes 1,2 and 8, and the Greenstaff have been putting sand in these.  If you do find your ball in one of these bunkers with no sand, please be very careful when entering and exiting the bunker not to damage the new liner.

Pro Shop

If we’re going to play golf throughout the winter, we’re going to need waterproof golf bags that protect our gear among the harsh conditions.

When you see the weather changing and rainclouds starting to form overhead, it can really flip your mood on the golf course. As the first drops of rain start to fall, you can already feel it start to slightly obscure your vision.

The rain makes visibility challenging enough, but it’s taken a step further when we start to feel soaked over the course of a few minutes and it’s harder to commit to our golf swings.

The Pro Shop want to help you get the most out of your time spent on the golf course. They have a wide range of waterproof golf bags available if you’re thinking of upgrading your gear. Why not pop in and have a browse?

Members Question

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

Q. After the resignation of Phil Musker and the appalling national press coverage that not only painted the Captain in a very poor light but also brought the good name of our club into disrepute, I would like to understand what is being done by the club to address the incident and to start to repair the reputation of the club.

A. The Committee is dealing with the matter as you would expect in line with the Club's policies, procedures, and rules. We will complete this process as quickly as possible and communicate more in due course

Hole in One

Did you know:

  • Today, golf isn’t known as a rebellious sport. But there was a time when it was. Golf was banned not only once but three times in Scotland between the years of 1457 and 1744. That’s because the government believed it interfered with military training
  • Tiger Woods took an interest in golf at only six months old and his father started teaching him at two years old. He regularly practiced and made his first hole-in-one at only eight!
  • Most professional golfers play to handicaps of 4 and 6, and that’s before they enter the professional ranks. Unfortunately, not all golfers are this gifted. The vast majority of golfers will not play to a handicap under 18.
  • Sports have a history of misogyny. Golf is no exception. That’s why the first round of women’s golf took four hundred years after the sport was created! This first round was played in Musselburgh, Scotland. In 1867, the first women’s club was developed. From here, women’s golf has an outstanding history.
  • There’s a 12,500 to 1 chance a typical golfer will make a hole-in-one. That’s because the width of the hole is so small. Even professional golfers can go their whole career without making a hole-in-one!

Happy golfing everyone,

Karen
