BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB

Three off the Tee - 12 November '24 Newsletter

Hello there

England’s Paul Waring arrived at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship simply looking to extend his season but now has the golfing world as his oyster after a life-changing Rolex Series victory. Waring went into the first of back-to-back DP World Tour Play-Offs 48th in the season-long standings and initially just looking to stay inside the top 50 to qualify for the DP World Tour Championship, the final event of the campaign. Instead he is set to have dual membership on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour for the 2025 season. Come on Rory! 🙂

Nev is starting Junior Coaching Sessions! Please get in touch with the Pro Shop for more information.

Member Photos

Golf courses are often a good place to spot mushrooms and David Braddock and Jenny Bell have  sent in these two lovely photos. David saw these Honey Waxcap mushrooms on the temporary 13th tee and advised that although listed as edible, they are not good flavour by all accounts and eating is never advised without confirmed identification by an expert. Admire them for their natural beauty alone . Nigel Lunn was all smiles in capturing the long lost sun on Sunday. Thank you David, Jenny and Nigel. Please keep sending your photos to generalmanager@broctonhall.com

Par for the Course

Our new bunker mats help retain sand on steep slopes. They work by trapping sand within the open structure of the fibres which allows the sand to be held on steeper bunker slopes. They have been used around the world on many golf courses including a number of championship courses. Our Greenkeeping team continue with the bunker renovations on the front nine.

Andy sent in some stunning photos of the sunrise this morning. Wow!

Our Gin of the week is Whitley Neill Oriental Spiced London Dry Gin - Rich, fragrant aromas of cardamom, cubeb and coriander lead into piney juniper and fresh citrus peel. Juniper is complemented on the palate by warm, earthy notes of cumin leading into more peppery, gingery spice with a dash of lemon.  A long, elegant and balanced finish full of pepper and savoury spice.

Pro Shop

Joe and Marcus have been conducting some testing in the studio with the plastic fairways and the popular SPURK mat.  They will be publishing the findings in next weeks Pro Shop newsletter.

Nev feels that the use of mats brings a whole new level of fun and strategy into the winter golf. Here’s how you can benefit: -

  • The SPURK mats have spike to secure it to the ground by standing on it, but if you only stand one a certain section of it, you can create different shots
  • Don’t like a downhill lie around the green?  No problem, only stand on the back of the mat and you’ll have a level lie.  Use the same technique for hitting high shots into the greens off the fairway.
  • Playing into the wind?  Stand on the front of the mat slightly, tilting it forwards and your ball will fly lower with less spin into the wind.
  • Want to avoid going left or right?  Tilt the mat left or right to avoid one side of the course or to reduce a slice or a hook.
  • Need some extra length off the fairway?  Use the plastic mat and place it side on with the ball teed up on the very back edge of the mat - then use your driver - it’s like teeing a ball up on the fairway!  Happy days!

Members Question

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

Hole in One

The Race to Dubai is a season-long competition where golfing icons and upcoming stars battle it out across a global schedule to be crowned the DP World Tour’s Number One player.

The Race to Dubai is a points-based ranking for DP World Tour members.

Featuring a minimum of 44 tournaments in 24 countries across five continents, to the players accumulate Race to Dubai Rankings Points at each counting event across three distinct phases of the season:

  • The Global Swings: Five ‘Global Swings’ showcase the different cultures and courses the DP World Tour has to offer.
  • The Back 9: The Race heats up on the ‘Back 9’ with increased Race to Dubai Ranking Points on offer and the chance to qualify for the DP World Tour Play-Offs
  • The DP World Tour Play-Offs: The final Sprint. 70 players remain and the Race to Dubai concludes with two Rolex Series events in the Middle East, as the DP World Tour Number One player is crowned.

The player with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the Race to Dubai Champion, winning the Harry Vardon Trophy.

Happy golfing everyone,
